Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum embraces our role as a school in a small rural community, whilst also providing a wide range of opportunities for children to learn about the world beyond Bubwith village.

Our curriculum values children having opportunities to develop their interpersonal and social communication skills alongside the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skills within identified subjects. We expect every pupil will learn regardless of background and the school’s direction stems from our mission statement ‘Believe, Challenge, Persevere, Succeed’.

As a maintained school, we are required to follow the national curriculum for pupils in Years 1 – 6 and the EYFS statutory framework 2021 for pupils in Receptions. (Links to both can be found below.)

Whilst the National Curriculum forms the basis of our curriculum offer, we want to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all pupils and we recognise the importance, in particular, of developing children’s knowledge building on what pupils know sequentially. Therefore, as a school, we have taken the decision (at the beginning of academic year 2023-24) to use ‘CUSP’ as the base curriculum for: Writing and Spelling, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music and DT.

Cusp is deliberately designed to give our children the tools and provision to ‘know more, do more and remember more’.

It is a curriculum developed from evidence-based research on how children learn and how knowledge is transferred into the children’s long-term memory. A large amount of our CUSP content is taught in discrete subjects but content is combined in a cross-curricular approach enabling us to put knowledge into context wherever natural links and combinations exist.

To support teaching and learning across the school, we use a number of targeted improvement programmes as a complement to the CUSP curriculum as follows:

Reading	Phonics teaching and early reading is taught using the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds validated phonics programme’. In KS2 pupils have a daily dedicated Guided Reading session based upon a range of books chosen to inspire and challenge pupils. The texts chosen provide a diverse range of social, moral and ethical issues as well as a range of authors.
Writing	Phonics teaching and early writing is taught using the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds validated phonics programme’. Throughout the school, CUSP writing units and sequences are used to develop pupils’ understanding of grammar, sentence structure and spelling and how to implement these elements within extended writing opportunities.
Maths	The Maths No Problem Scheme was introduced for all classes in September 2022. To enhance our Maths offer, in KS1 we also follow the mastering number approach created by the Ridings Maths Hub and at Key Stage 2 we use the number facts and times tables number sense approach developed by Clare Christie. Where teachers feel it is appropriate, additional Maths Mastery Materials to complement the Maths No Problem scheme are also used.
Science, History, Geography, Art, DT, Music, French	CUSP
RE	We follow the East Riding of Yorkshire RE Syllabus This is on a rolling programme (2 year at KS1 and 4 year at KS2)
PSHCE	We use the You, Me and PSHE scheme to teach about PSHE which includes developments on Relationships Education.
PE	We use the PRIMARY STEPS IN PE Scheme created by the Get Ahead Partnership to deliver our sessions. These are taken by the class teacher and/or specialist PE teacher paid for using our Sports Premium. We follow a varied curriculum. We take our Year 3 and 4 pupils for a 10 week block of swimming each year.
Computing	We use Purple Mash to teach concepts and skills in Computing.

For subjects where the CUSP scheme is not followed, the CUSP pedagogy and approach still drives the teaching and learning style and delivery.
