At Bubwith Primary School we recognise the importance of Science in every aspect of daily life and are committed to ensuring our pupils have the necessary knowledge and skills to support them in each phase of their education, and in their lives beyond school. Our extensive school grounds are utilized to enhance Science teaching and give pupils ‘hands on’ and meaningful learning experiences.

Science is taught using the CUSP curriculum, which is carefully aligned with guidance provided by the National Curriculum sequence and content. In Early Years, Science is taught through the Knowledge and Understanding of the World and Physical Development strands of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum. The children learn about the scientific world around them in their play and during carefully designed adult led activities.

In KS1 and KS2, our Science curriculum is delivered through a series of CUSP modules which are deliberately spaced throughout the academic year with opportunities to introduce and revisit key concepts. This approach enables pupil to deepen their understanding and embed learning. Through studying CUSP science, pupils become more expert as they progress through the curriculum, accumulating, connecting and making sense of the rich substantive and disciplinary knowledge.

Substantive knowledge (what pupils will know) - this is the subject knowledge and explicit vocabulary used to learn about the content. Common misconceptions are explicitly revealed as non-examples and positioned against known and accurate content.

Disciplinary knowledge (what pupils will do)- refers to the how pupils are ‘working scientifically’. It is knowing how to collect, use, interpret, understand and evaluate the evidence from scientific processes. Disciplinary knowledge is explicitly taught; it is not assumed that pupils will acquire these skills by chance. Pupils construct understanding by applying substantive knowledge to questioning and planning, observing, performing a range of tests, accurately measuring, comparing through identifying and classifying, using observations and gathering data to help answer questions, explaining and reporting, predicting, concluding, improving, and seeking patterns.

‘Working scientifically’ is taught within the CUSP curriculum through carefully planned tasks using IPROF criteria:

• identifying and classifying

• pattern seeking

• research

• observing over time

• fair and comparative testing

 

CUSP Science provides Working Scientifically coverage maps to ensure the balance of provision in KS1, Lower and Upper KS2. Staff make use of high-quality CUSP assessment material to assess learning and ensure any gaps in knowledge are swiftly addressed.
