Starting Reception at Bubwith Community Primary School

Starting Reception Guide

This guide from startingreception.co.uk has lots of useful information to help prepare for your child's first year in Primary School!

We understand that all children develop at their own pace, and that we’re all learning from birth. When it’s time to start school, some children will need more help than others.

There are key skills* that schools expect children to be learning before their first day. Practising these will make your child’s journey to Reception as positive as possible.

Potty Training Guide

Potty training is an important milestone in your child’s development. We understand that all children develop at their own pace, but research shows it’s best for your child’s bowel and bladder health to stop using nappies, including reusable nappies, pull-ups and training pants, between 18 and 30 months.

It’s really important that children are out of all nappies well in advance of starting Reception year in school to help them to feel confident, healthy and part of the group. The only exception should be children with a diagnosed medical need, such as a bladder or bowel condition.

Toothbrushing Support

Startingreception.co.uk have launched a brand new guide on children's toothbrushing, designed to support nurseries and early years settings to share clear, trusted advice about children's oral health with families.

Book recommendations!

We prioritise giving children frequent opportunities to access language rich texts in school and research shows that children who choose to read for pleasure have increased vocabulary, empathy, attention and achieve greater success in the future.  This list is also great to share with anyone who wants ideas for gift giving!

Nursery Rhymes

Listening to and engaging with Nursery Rhymes is hugely beneficial for your child's development so please do use the links to enjoy some nostalgia together!

Read together every day!

Enjoying and having fun sharing stories and books is one of the best things you can do to help your child get ready for school.

CBeebies "Time for School" Resources

It's school offer season across the UK, a time when parents find out which school their child has been offered a place at. For parents of children preparing to start primary school, knowing how to prepare their child for school might seem a bit daunting, but Bitesize and CBeebies are here to help.

The CBeebies Learn app is full of fun, educational games and videos that are mapped to the Early Years Foundation Stage - to help your child get ready for school.

Video on Supporting Your Child

Getting your child ready for starting primary school can feel like a big step, so it’s understandable if you’re feeling nervous about this new chapter in their life. You’re not the only one, and it’s likely that your child will be feeling a mix of emotions too.

NHS Starting School Reward Chart

If your child is about to start either at pre-school or at primary school, there are lots of things you can work on at home to help get them ready.

Print off our downloadable reward chart to use with your child. Choose one or two ‘mini goals’ to work on together and write them on the chart. Then pop it up somewhere you both can look at it regularly – the fridge for example.
